Fortum Recycling & Waste in Nyborg and SLB Capturi to demonstrate carbon capture at high-temperature hazardous waste facility

Published: 11/22/2024

Fortum is in the final stages of preparing for its carbon capture demonstration project at the Nyborg facility. This will be the first time that carbon capture will be demonstrated at a high-temperature hazardous waste facility, with the pilot project being carried out in collaboration with SLB Capturi.

Fortum's Project Manager, Carbon Capture, Katrine Krogholm Magnussen, is pleased that the critical process containers have now arrived at site at the high-temperature incineration plant in Nyborg. "It has been almost two years since Fortum signed the contract to test the amine technology from SLB Capturi, and it is an important milestone in the maturation process of the Danish project that we can now test the effectiveness of carbon capture from our hazardous waste incineration plant in Nyborg."

The Mobile Test Unit (MTU) is expected to be operational by the end of the year and will collect CO2 from two of the three thermal kiln lines at the Nyborg facility during the operational period. Several years of preparation have preceded this, but now Fortum can practically test its ambition for a future where industrial hazardous waste is treated with minimal climate impact. The focus of the pilot is to test the efficiency of carbon capture, thereby reducing CO2 emissions and enhancing the sustainability of Fortum's overall hazardous waste treatment.

As Fortum's partner in the pilot project, SLB Capturi is also looking forward to demonstrating carbon capture at the Nyborg facility: "We have extensive experience with carbon capture projects in various locations around the world. We are pleased that our mobile test facility, based on our amine technology developed over nearly twenty years, will soon document its application at a high-temperature hazardous waste incineration facility," says Tove Ormevik, Director Delivery Functions & Aftermarket, SLB Capturi.

SLB Capturi’s MTUs are fully functional, small-scale carbon capture plants designed for flexible and efficient testing. The MTUs are container-based, allowing for easy transport and setup at customer industrial sites, where they can test SLB Capturi’s Advanced Carbon Capture™ technology on actual flue gas sources. The MTUs replicate all essential processes found in large-scale capture plants, with test results that can be directly scaled up to commercial applications.
